Bill Denz was a mountaineer with attitude. He inspired and provoked a generation of Kiwi climbers. Denz pushed the limits beyond what we thought was possible and left a collection of routes in the Aoraki / Mount Cook region and in the Darrans that are seldom repeated. Climbers still break out in a nervous sweat just thinking about them. His death on Makalu robbed the climbing world of one of its great characters but created an enduring legend. This book captures the energy and vision that Denz took into the mountains but it also speaks of the warmth and affection with which he is remembered. Congratulations to Paul Maxim for bringing the Bill Denz story to a new audience. The New Zealand Alpine Club is delighted to support the publication of this biography.
